The woman and everyone in her city was afraid. But in the ominous news the woman saw a “bigger picture”: That there was a supreme God who was carrying out his plan.
The woman was Rahab, a prostitute in ancient Jericho, who welcomed the two spies sent by Joshua. As a result, she and her family were the only survivors in their city. Listen to what she said to the young spies she had hidden in her house:
“I know the Lord has given you this land. … For the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.”
According to Hebrews 11, Rahab survived because she had faith.
“It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.” Hebrews 11.31 NLT
Coffee/tea thought: May Rahab’s faith be our model for today. May we also choose to trust that God is working for good in the world.
