Years ago, our former pastor in Washington, D. C., Dr. Richard Halverson, talked about the value of “WITH-ness”.
One way he demonstrated this practically by inviting someone to have lunch with him during the week. (I was one who greatly benefited from this!)
Halverson told of a time he had lunch with a church member who was a businessman. After a pleasant lunch, the businessman looked at his watch, pulled out his checkbook and pen, and said, “Dick, I have an appointment in ten minutes. How much do you want?”
Halverson replied, “I don’t want anything. I just wanted to be with you.”
There was a long silence. Finally, deeply touched, the businessman said, “I’ve never been with anyone who didn’t want something from me.”
Coffee/tea thought: Lord Jesus, please give me grace today to simply be WITH someone, offering the precious gift of WITH-ness for your sake.
